General Info

Population : Approximately 33 million.

Language : Bahasa Indonesia is spoken throughout the region. Several Javanese dialects are also used. English is spoken in all major hotels.

Climate : Whether it is in the cooler highlands or tropical coastal areas, temperatures are fairly even all year round. In the Mountains it can get cool enough to require a jacket.

Time : West Indonesia Standard Time (used throughout Java) is GMT plus 7 hours.

Tipping : Major hotels add an 11% service charge and 10% government tax to bills. Where not included a tip 5 to 10% is satisfactory depending on the type of establishment.

Airport Portage : Rp. 1000 per bag or Rp. 2000 for a bag more than 20kgs. Tipping taxi drivers is not necessary, but rounding up fares to the nearest Rp. 500 or Rp. 1000 is usual.

Begging : Although Indonesians are a charitable people, begging is discouraged by the authorities and begging in lines of traffic is illegal. It is up to the individual to decide whether or not to give to beggars, but be aware that if you give to one you risk attracting a whole lot more. For security reasons it is better not to open the door or window of your car to anyone.

Currency : Major world currencies in the form of cash or travelers changers can be easily converted into Indonesian Rupiah at banks, authorized money changers or the cashiers desk at most hotels. Rupiah comes in banknotes of 100,500,1000,5000,10.000,20.000,and 50.000, Coins are in denominations of 25,50,100,500 and Rp. 1000. It is advisable to carry small denominations (500 or 1000) since many taxi drivers and small stores do not carry large amounts of small change. Daily foreign exchange rates are posted at banks and in leading daily newspapers.

Office Hours : Government offices open from 08.00 to 15.00 hours Monday to Thursday. 08.00 to 11.30 hours on Friday and 08.00 to 14.00 hours on Saturday. Business office hours vary. Some open from 05.00 to 16.00 hours, others from 09.00 to 17.00 hours. There are offices which work half days on Saturday and some are closed. Bank hours are 08.00 or 08.30 to 16.00 hours. Private banks open on Saturday until 11.30 hours. Bank branches and money changers in hotels stay open longer.

Manners : Take off your shoes when entering a temple. Use your right hand to give and receive. Do not touch an adult's head. Do not use your forefinger to point at anybody-use all fingers of the right hand together with palms upwards or use your thumb. To call somebody over beckon with your fingers together, palm facing you.

Water : It is not safe to drink tap water; be cautious about buying unknown brands of bottled water. Some of these are no better than tap water.

Personal Safety : Beware of thieves. Women are advised to carry bags in front of them. Don't carry wallets in back pockets.
